Wolves and wilderness: A mythological and psychological approach Stout, G. R. (2001). Wolves and wilderness: A mythological and psychological approach. (Doctoral dissertation, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2001). From Aldo Leopold's time forward, scientists have shown that forests without major predators like wolves or mountain lions become overbrowsed by animals whose only remaining predator is man, and that overbrowsed forests cannot produce healthy flora.
Wolves in nature (WIN) is a research and educational project with the purpose of investigating the role of a top predator, the gray wolf (Canis Lupus), in structuring ecological communities. Special emphasis is on the role of wolves as potential keystone species in top-down community regulation with linkages to biodiversity through trophic cascades.

Predator Friendly The health of Thirteen Mile Farm's rangelands are reflected not only in its livestock and forage, but also in the existing wildlife populations of predators-coyotes, bears, mountain lions, eagles, and their natural prey: mice, rabbits, gophers, and deer. Understanding the predator/prey relationships and the protective instincts animals possess has made predator-friendly ranching possible.

Non-lethal Control How should wolves be managed to prevent them killing livestock? Some people will say wolves should never be managed. Others will say all wolves should be shot. An in-between position is usually adopted in relatively enlightened practice. This essay examines in turn the various non-lethal means to control predators and more specifically wolves.

Nästa vintersäsong registrerades 11 vargar i reviret. Flertalet av ungarna som föddes senvåren 2001 hade då lämnat flocken för att hitta en partner och bilda ett eget revir.

Guardian Llamas Llamas make excellent livestock guardians. This fact was researched first in the early 1990's by Dr. William H. Franklin of Iowa State University. Dr. Franklin studied the guardian behavior of llamas -- the how and why of guard llamas. He also compared their usefulness with other guardian species such as dogs, including the useful life expectancy of the llama versus the dog, and looked at the economic factors of cost savings in this particular approach to predator control.

Yellowstone Wolf Tracker Contents Yellowstone Wolf Tracker is a repository of experiences and information about wild gray wolves in Yellowstone National Park. In 1995, gray wolves were restored to the nation's first national park after a 60+ year absence. The event has been hailed the conservation achievement of the century and has sparked an amazing chain of events that has expanded our knowledge of wolves and affirmed our role as ecological care-takers in our nation's premier wildlife sanctuary.

California Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Programs Branch Bear Management Program Black bears (Ursus americanus) are recognized as an important component of California's ecosystems and as a valuable resource for the people of California. The black bear has been classified as a game mammal since 1948. Since that time, hunting regulations have become more restrictive, prohibiting trapping, killing of cubs or sows with cubs, and reducing the bag limit from two to one bear per license year.

Wolfology Even if it isn't a word you'll find in Webster's, it seems to capture what this website is all about. Namely, the study of wolves. Admittedly, it's an unorthodox name. But not too long ago, studying wolves was considered unorthodox, too, a path that would almost certainly leave a biologist languishing in the hinterland of the scientific community, or a layman to be labeled a flake.

Livestock Guard Dogs, Llamas and Donkeys Quick Facts... * Guard dogs are an effective method to reduce predation on livestock. Guard llamas and donkeys also appear to reduce losses but appear less effective than guard dogs. * Guard dogs can be used in farm flock/pasture operations, on open range, and in feedlots. Llamas and donkeys are most effective in fenced pastures less than 300 acres. * Raise guard dogs with sheep and treat them as working dogs. Introduce llamas and donkeys to sheep in small pens.
Guard llamas
offer a viable, nonlethal alternative for reducing predation, while requiring
no training and little care. Coyote predation is a serious problem for the
sheep industry. The traditional approach to controlling predator losses
has been to trap and poison coyotes. During this study, 145 sheep producers
using guard llamas were interviewed to determine characteristics of the
guard llamas and husbandry practices.
